John became a true Hawg and a Goat at the same time. Warm but moody, it took a while to get to know Stew, but his friendship made the effort worthwhile. Full of life and love, he was never satisfied with one woman; he settled for two.

October 19, 1956 - February 5, 2019

STEWART, John F., III- of Massapequa on Tuesday February 5, 2019, at the age of 62. Loving husband and father of six.

John was born on October 19, 1956 in Queens, NY to John and Mary Stewart of Levittown. He graduated from Chaminade High School in 1974 and then proudly attended the United States Military Academy at West Point. After graduating in 1978, John served his country for six years in the United States Army and was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain. John obtained a Masters of Business Administration from Columbia University in 1991. John had a distinguished 30-year career in banking, including 25 years with Citigroup where he served as Managing Director of National Distribution, President of Citibank New York, President and CEO of Diners Club Canada, and Managing Director of the Atlantic Division of Citifinancial.

After a brief retirement John went on to serve as CEO of First National Bank and most recently as Executive Vice President of Flushing Bank. John also served as Chairman of the Consumer Bankers Association, based in Washington, DC and as Treasurer of the New York Bankers Association. He was also a graduate of the Partnership for New York David Rockefeller Fellows program. Philanthropy was a very important part of John's life. He devoted his time, leadership, and financial resources to numerous non-profit organizations around the Metropolitan area. He was Trustee of the New York City Chapter Board of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and an advisory board member of the Metro New York and Western New York chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. John was a devout Catholic and a supportive parishioner of St. Rose of Lima in Massapequa.

John is survived by his wife Elizabeth; his children Tara Harrigan (Mike), Brian (Amanda), Brendan, Lauren, Courtney, and John; his grandchildren Jack, Kelsey, Caitlyn, Logan, and Sebastian; his parents John and Mary and his seven siblings. He was an avid reader, golfer and runner and loved traversing the country and the world visiting his children and grandchildren.
